Personal statement #1
My grandfather has always been my motivator. He was disabled for over 30 years, and always had the strength to accomplish things others could not. John V. Flores was a man of character and simply a man of determination. Only having six blood grandkids he was there as much as he could knowing his disabilities. His words and strength motivated me to do the things I do at my fullest potential.
Grandpa Johnny was one that was in a car crash disabling him in the hips. He has been a big part of mine and my families life. My hobbies in life are sports and his was his avocado trees in the back yard. Being disabled in the hips gave him trouble walking, but that did not stop him from nurturing his trees. He would go out to the back yard with his crutches and water all his trees one tree at a time. Right around every october he would be out there in his crutches still picking the ripened avocados. Also, in his wheelchair he would be out there picking up the bad fruit off the floor and throwing them away. In my hobbies nothing excited me more than to get that phone call saying “I’m coming down, when and where are you playing at Mijo?” Hearing that voice saying something close to that made me work harder that week at practice. Working harder to make him proud and see the delightness in my grandfather's eyes knowing his grandson is on the court or field doing what he loves. He gave me a reason to work harder and be more dedicated at what I do because I seen that If there's a will there's a way, no comments no excuses, and I should not come up with any excuse to not work hard or go to practice. Being able to see my brother and my cousins walk down the line in their High school graduation made me look forward to graduation. Having him watch me walk down that line with my accomplishment was something that I looked forward to. As well as having no excuses on the field or court there can not be any in the classroom. He has motivated me to always bounce back at whatever you are doing and never stop moving up. As his disabilities gotten worse he had his hips surgically removed so what that did to him was keeping him in a wheelchair. Did that stop him from watering and picking his fruit? No, all it did was made him sit down instead of stand up. When there is a obstacle you face yeah you might have set back but it is up to you to bounce back. That is what I keep in my mind throughout the rest of my years in school, never give up but always work to the top. Unfortunately on July 8 2016, I saw the miserable image of my Grandfather taking his last breath. From that day on I have done and tried everything in my power to have him look down and still have that delightness in his eyes. Have I accomplished everything I tried doing? Nope. Is there times where I might have done something wrong? Yes, no one is perfect but when I remember my Grandfather and him still being able to overcome his obstacles with his disabilities pushed me to be determined and overcome any obstacle life throws at me. |
